What were you doing at the age of 19?

The chances are, it was probably fairly underwhelming when you compare it to what Trent Alexander-Arnold has achieved at such a young age.

The Liverpool right-back is about to represent his boyhood club in a Champions League final and has been called up by his country for the World Cup this summer.

Thirteen years ago, Alexander-Arnold was joining Liverpool as a six-year-old.

However, things could have been very different despite living right next to Liverpool’s training ground.

That’s because there was a strong connection with Manchester United.

His uncle, John Alexander, was club secretary at Old Trafford, while his nan was referred to in Alex Ferguson’s autobiography as his "first steady girlfriend.”

It’s no surprise Ferguson tried to get him to sign for the Red Devils then.

However, when the legendary manager asked Alexander-Arnold to sign for United, rather than Liverpool, the defender’s excuse was just brilliant.

“My mum doesn’t drive on motorways," the youngster told him, per the Mirror.

We can’t imagine that well down too well with Ferguson - but it did the trick!

Crystal Palace v Liverpool - Premier League

Recently, Brian McClair, who spent 11 years with the club as a player before overseeing their youth set-up between 2006 and 2015, explained how there was simply no way of convincing Alexander-Arnold to leave Liverpool.

“We saw him when he was playing outside right in an Under-14s game at Carrington for Liverpool," McClair said.

“I thought, he’s a good player, who’s he?

“Even though his uncle was the secretary, you knew you weren’t going to get him. So we were never going to get him.

Liverpool v Newcastle United - Premier League

“His sister is a Liverpool fan, the family were all Liverpool fans, he wasn’t going to leave Liverpool. It was a simple message.

“You can’t say to John Alexander ‘Get into your sister’ because she only knows the answer. It’s great for him that he’s got a nephew who is playing for Liverpool.”
