In the end, Jack Wilshere’s performances for Arsenal during the closing months of the season cost him a place in England’s 2018 World Cup squad.England boss Gareth Southgate has decided to take Manchester City’s versatile midfielder Fabian Delph to Russia instead of Wilshere, who has won 34 caps for his country since 2010.“Jack had a good spell but was maybe not as effective towards the end of the season,” Southgate told reporters on Thursday. “We’re very open minded in terms of what we want.”Initially, he attempted to make light of his surprise omission, posting a couple of light-hearted tweets. However, he then said how he really felt in two tweets posted on Thursday afternoon.“Think its about time I had my say,” Wilshere wrote. “It goes without saying that I’m naturally incredibly disappointed to have been left out of the England squad for the World Cup. I’ve felt fit, sharp and strong all season and believe I should be in the squad!“And given the chance i could have made a real impact. However, I have to respect the manager’s decision and would like to wish the whole squad all the very best for the tournament. I will always be an England fan and will be supporting the boys with the rest of the nation.”

Wilshere blasted by journalist after statement

This was a very mature response from the 25-year-old, who is arguably the most talented midfielder that England have at their disposal right now.

But Southgate has selected players, by and large, based on form rather than reputation.

Despite Wilshere’s magnanimous statement, he was still blasted by The Daily Telegraph’s Matt Law, who tweeted: “What on earth is Jack Wilshere doing releasing statements he should be in the World Cup squad? He is a prime example of a footballer ignoring good advice and let down by bad advice or no advice at all. Shame he left a good agent and ignored others who wanted to help him.”

Hmm. If you say so, Matt.

Wilshere responds in style with tweet

Rather than bite his tongue and ignore the tweet, Wilshere has now responded in style.

“And what would you know about me or who gives me advice?” the Arsenal star replied. “Because i believe i should be in the squad means I'm being self indulgent? You know nothing.”

Well said, Jack.

He was well within his rights to get that off his chest. Why should he be made to feel like he should have stayed quiet?

The aforementioned journalist, however, came back for more shortly after Wilshere’s reply.

“I've always liked your confidence on and off the pitch but I stand by my opinion on this and, in general, I don't think you have received or taken advice that has been particularly beneficial,” he added. “Clearly you disagree so I'll leave it there. All the best for the future.”

Needless to say, his second tweet has not gone down particularly well with football fans…
