Anthony Martial's problems reached a new high this week when he was left out of France's World Cup squad. The French international has paid the price for starting just 18 league games, a consequence of his seemingly hit-and-miss relationship with Jose Mourinho. There are times when it is baffling that the 22-year-old doesn't play a greater role at Old Trafford, though on other occasions this season, such as in the recent 1-0 defeat to Brighton, he hasn't done enough and his manager has been vindicated in his hesitance to rely on him.It could be a very big summer in Martial's career as speculation continues to link him with a move away from the north-west and if Manchester United were to sell him, it would be divisive to say the least. On BT Sport ahead of the Red Devils' FA Cup final with Chelsea, presenter Jake Humphrey read out a question from a United fan asking whether the former Monaco attacker should stay.Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes certainly had some interesting points to raise on the matter, with the latter worrying the starlet could become another Mohamed Salah or Kevin de Bruyne and go on to prove Mourinho wrong.

Paul Scholes responds

"I'd like to think he'd stay, he's a young player and he's still got time to develop," Scholes said.

"Whether his manager quite fancies him I'm not too sure about that at the minute, he's not shown too much confidence in him. I think he's a really good talent, as I say young, there's still time, I think he needs a bit of love he needs an arm around him.

"He needs a consistent run of games, he's coming in and every time he comes on he impresses me - he's a player I'd like to have in my team.

"I just hope he's not one of those players that leaves and then we see the best of them. There is a danger."

It's true that Martial has cut an unhappy figure at times since arriving in English football in 2015. Perhaps Mourinho isn't the best manager for him if it's affection he's after, but Ferdinand insisted there is nothing wrong with some players needing more attention in order to raise their game.

Rio's verdict

"If you could get the Martial for the first season he was here, one of the best players in the league, he was winning games on his own, changing games, defining games with moments of brilliance," the former centre-back added.

"Like Scholesy said, there are some players that need to be treated differently sometimes, as much as you think you should all be treated the same.

"But there are some players who are precocious talents that need to be cajoled into feeling their worth in the team."

It remains to be seen whether the Special One agrees with them, as it's his opinion that really counts over the course of the next few months.
