Tag Team wrestling in the WWE has taken a major drop-off since its heyday in the late 90s.
Back in the Attitude Era you had teams such as Edge and Cristian, The Dudley Boyz, The Hardy Boyz, APA, and so many more. Today; the amount of top tag teams in the company that can truly connect with fans are scarce.
Perhaps the only tag team that anyone truly cares about is The New Day over on SmackDown Live. While The Usos are also a big name today, they simply don't connect on the elite level the way New Day does.
With all that being said, contrasting then's Tag Team division to today's shows just how much the division has dropped off in recent years.
The SmackDown Live Tag Team Titles are currently held by The Bludgeon Brothers, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan.
Harper and Rowan have been built up as these unstoppable machines in recent weeks, and nobody could care less.
The RAW Tag Team Titles are held by Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt. While they are currently mild fan-favorites, nobody truly cares who holds the titles at the moment.
At WrestleMania 34 the titles were truly devalued when Braun Strowman and a child from the audience, who just so happened to be the son of a WWE referee, won the title from Cesaro and Sheamus.
Cesaro and Sheamus are a great tag team and have done great things for the division, but to lose to a child at WrestleMania - dropping the titles nonetheless, is pathetic booking.
This just goes to show how much WWE cares about their tag team division at the moment - not at all. A recent report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider all but confirms this.
He suggests that the reason the WWE doesn't put any effort into tag team wrestling anymore is because it's no longer a big money-maker (quotes via Ringside News):
“I think they have decided that nobody involved in the tag division is worth their time and they’re not going to invest into it because they don’t think it makes them any money. And That’s that.”
