It’s a rare trophyless season for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United.

A second-placed finish behind the best Premier League side in history and an FA Cup trophy would have represented a pretty decent campaign for the Red Devils.

The truth is, they finished 19 points behind their city rivals, were knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage by Sevilla and have now lost in the FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Suddenly, there are a few questions being asked of Mourinho.

He wasn’t helped by the fact Romelu Lukaku was only fit enough to be placed on the bench for the final.

The Portuguese boss appeared to accuse the Belgian of deciding himself that he wasn’t fit enough to start the match.

Lukaku was finally introduced in the 73rd-minute as he attempted to get the Red Devils back into the match.

MOURINHO'S DOUBLE CHANGE

But he wasn’t the only player coming on at that time.

Anthony Martial also came on in the double change, with Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard making way.

The two England internationals didn’t have the greatest games but had just started to look bright when they were brought off.

And United legends Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand could hardly believe that Mourinho had taken them both off.

"Jose's substitutes, he brought Rashford and Lingard off just as they were starting to influence the game I thought,” Scholes said on BT Sport.

"I thought Jesse was just getting in those spaces, between the midfield and the back four. Rashford then had a great chance, made a great run, and all of a sudden they were taken off.

"Sometimes those two local lads are the easy target, how Sanchez stayed on the pitch with them two creating problems as they were I have no idea.”

And Ferdinand agreed: "I agree, we looked at each other and thought 'wow', that's a big call there because Sanchez wasn't playing well, wasn't influencing the game in any way shape or form.

"But listen the manager is paid to make big decision, today in terms of substitutes, I don't think he made the correct ones."
