Zinedine Zidane sprung a surprise with his team selection for Real Madrid’s final league fixture of the season against Villarreal on Saturday.The French coach, whose side face Liverpool in their third successive Champions League final next weekend, handed an unexpected senior debut to his son.Luca Zidane, who turned 20 last week, started in goal ahead of Keylor Navas, who was rested, and Kiko Casilla.Many football fans on social media were saying the same thing after hearing the France Under-20 international had been selected by his dad.Surely he wouldn’t have been playing if Zizou wasn’t his father?Accusations of nepotism were hardly unexpected. After all, several clips of Luca making some embarrassing mistakes for Madrid’s youth teams had gone viral over the past couple of years.Was he really good enough to be starting for arguably the world’s biggest football club?

Real Madrid failed to secure all three points, despite taking a 2-0 lead through Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Luca was blamed by some fans for Villarreal’s equaliser.

However, the youngster’s overall performance wasn’t too bad at all. He made one fantastic save from a free-kick which showed why his father thought he was ready for his senior debut.

Spanish newspaper AS said of Luca's first appearance: “Looked good with ball at feet - one of his chief qualities - and showed fine reflexes to keep out a Nicola Sansone free-kick.

“He could do nothing about Roger Martínez's goal for Villarreal and, overall, gave a good account of himself on his debut - although he was too easily rounded by Samu Castillejo for the hosts' equaliser.”
