Fernando Torres will play his final game for Atletico Madrid on Sunday, 23 years after joining them as a kid.

It didn't even take ten years for Torres to go from that kid in his boyhood club's youth system to becoming El Nino, the teenage captain of Atletico and one of the most sought-after strikers around.

Torres was a hero for Atleti in his first spell, truly a supporter on the pitch, but he made the difficult decision to leave the club in 2007 to join Liverpool.

Torres improved further under Rafa Benitez, becoming arguably the best striker in the world as he finished 3rd in the Ballon d'Or voting in 2008 after he had scored the winning goal for Spain in the Euro 2008 final.

Issues at Liverpool saw Torres push through an ill-fated move to Chelsea in 2011 that, while he would win European trophies there, his individual form fell off a cliff.

Half a season on loan at Milan in 2014 didn't work out either but Torres was gifted the opportunity to return to his boyhood club in 2015.

Despite the fall in his stock, Torres was given a genuine hero's welcome by the Atletico fans and that's where he has stayed for four seasons.

This year, his final at the club, saw him finally win a major trophy at Atletico: the 2017/18 Europa League, the first trophy of any kind that he won in an Atletico shirt since lifting the Segunda division title in what was his first full season as a professional.

The Torres/Atletico story finally comes to an end on Sunday but it certainly won't go unnoticed.

Atletico will pay homage to their number nine with a special message embroidered on their shirts.

'De Nino a Leyenda' is the message - 'From boy to legend', a perfect tribute to one of Atletico's most iconic players.

It'll be a sad day as Torres says goodbye to the club for a final time, although it won't be a farewell to football.

Torres has admitted that he has offers from elsewhere and will consider them properly after Sunday's match vs Eibar.
