Antoine Griezmann may have played his last match for Atletico Madrid - but at least he’d be going out on a high.

Griezmann produced a Man of the Match performance in the Europa League final against Marseille on Wednesday, scoring a brace during a comfortable 3-0 win.

The Frenchman refused to be drawn on his future after the game and it’s still unknown whether he will be an Atleti player come the start of next season.

With Griezmann’s €100 million release clause coming into play after the World Cup, it’s probably not too surprising to see Barcelona sniffing around.

But convincing the forward to leave the club he loves so much is proving difficult.

So the Catalan club have pulled out their trump card - Lionel Messi.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Messi has contacted Griezmann in an attempt to persuade him to join Barca.

Messi told Griezmann that “that they are waiting for him with open arms in the Barça dressing room.”

And it seems to have done the trick with the report claiming that Griezmann prefers to join Barca than stay at Atletico right now, with the main reason being Messi’s phonecall.

In fact, Griezmann would earn less money at Barca than he would at Atleti but Messi’s involvement has caught his attention.

“The call of, for many, the best player in the world has made Grizi consider the option of starting his Barça season as the best possible,” AS state.

But it’s not just Messi that is persuading Griezmann to join the Blaugrana.

Fellow forward Luis Suarez also spoke publicly about Griezmann’s potential arrival and suggested that the deal might already be done.

"It makes the club proud to bring players of this quality like Antoine, like [Ousmane] Dembele and [Philippe] Coutinho came,” Suarez said.

"He's a player who brings a huge amount, he has a lot of years playing at the highest level, always fighting. He rules up front for Atletico and that is fundamental.

"He is not coming to take the place of anyone, but with the ambition of winning important things.

"He will be welcomed."
