Although the fight still hasn’t been announced, there is still some excitement towards a potential bout between Georges St-Pierre and Nate Diaz.

UFC president Dana White recently admitted that the organisation is looking to add that fight to the UFC 227 card, which is currently being headlined by the bantamweight championship grudge rematch between T.J. Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt.

He also revealed that they want Alexander Gustafsson and Luke Rockhold to meet inside of the Octagon in the light heavyweight division.

Since White’s announcement, it has been revealed that GSP’s camp is unaware of any talk of a fight against the Stockton native in Los Angeles, while Diaz doesn’t seem to be too interested in a clash against St-Pierre either, despite there being rumours of negotiations of a return taking place.

Now, former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub has revealed on his Below the Belt podcast that GSP isn’t interested in the fight against Diaz, only because he’s waiting to fight the winner of the potential super fight between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

A bout between the pair has been rumoured for some years now, with the antics in Brooklyn by the Notorious only increasing the talk of a clash between the Irishman and the dangerous Dagestani.

Schaub is claiming that sources have told him McGregor will meet The Eagle in September, with GSP eager to fight the winner - something Nurmagomedov has been vocal about wanting since defeating Al Iaquinta to claim the lightweight title.

According to SportsJoe.ie, he said: “The rumours going around is that Nate is going to fight GSP in Los Angeles, in August.

“I don’t think so. What I hear is that GSP doesn’t want that Diaz fight...what he wants to do is want and fight the winner of Conor and Khabib, which is happening in September.

“That would put GSP’s fight timeline around December.”

While admitting that this is what sources have told him, a colossal clash like that would be announced well beforehand by the UFC, so they have enough time to promote it - which is why McGregor stepping in as a last-minute replacement to fight Khabib was off the cards.

It’s a huge fight, and it deserves to be promoted that way.

With GSP a fighter who is perhaps able to pick and choose his opponents freely, the company will know that a clash against either man is a guaranteed moneymaker - and a historic one at that.

Although the UFC is heading to Russia this year, White already confirmed that any clash between McGregor and Nurmagomedov would only happen in Las Vegas.
