After win away to title rivals Juventus in late April, Napoli and their fans were starting to dream. The win left Maurizio Sarri’s side one point from the league leaders, with Juve still to travel to Inter and Roma in tricky encounters. It seemed like fate that the Neopolitan club were due to emulate their Diego Maradona infused glory days.Unfortunately, it ended as Italian football inevitably does. The challenging clubs gave it their all, then in the end Juventus won.The Old Lady powered through in the final weeks and capped their title celebrations with a 2-1 win over Verona yesterday. After the game the players celebrated, and in typical modern fashion many of them posted footage of the scenes on social media. However, one update to the Instagram story of Douglas Costa caused a particular stir. His video showed a Juventus fan holding aloft a sky-blue coffin shaped banner with the Napoli badge and “Insigne” on the front – the name of Napoli’s star player.Unsurprisingly this hasn’t gone down well in Naples, and the post has even sparked a furious tweet from the official Napoli account, which you can see below.

The tweet was only posted on the Italian language account, but a translation shows how strongly worded it was.

“We are truly indignant at the shameful and offensive attitude held by some Juventus players today. Serious gestures that offend the dignity of the people and a Neapolitan like Insigne. It is unacceptable #ForzaNapoliSempre”

Whilst no one is accusing Costa of endorsing the fans in question, the banner is clearly in very poor taste, and the footage will do nothing to sooth an already bitter rivalry between the two clubs.

It’s a shame to see the season rounded off in such acrimonious fashion, after one of the best Italian title races in years. Let’s hope the war of words ends there.
