There was feeling that the FA Cup final would go a long way towards defining Manchester United's season.

Ahead of the final on Saturday, supporters were split over whether the club had made great strides towards progress or should take no pride in finishing so far behind Manchester City at all.

Defeat to Chelsea, though, was quite the blow.

The Blues took the lead early on when Phil Jones felled Eden Hazard in the United box with the mercurial Belgian taking the spot kick himself and scoring.

United barely threatened for the remainder of the first-half with the attacking triumvirate of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez proving largely ineffectual.

Man Utd suffer FA Cup final defeat

After the break, the Red Devils looked a better side but Chelsea were able to hold out until the final whistle with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic missing decent headed opportunities.

A season without a trophy is always one of disappointment for United, and Mourinho.

As a result, there is an even greater incentive for the club to bring about the changes this summer to recapture silverware and close the gap to Manchester City.

Mourinho wants to sell four players

And while big money signings were always going to be on the cards, Saturday's FA Cup final has confirmed to Mourinho who he wants to sell.

According to The Sun, the Portuguese wants to axe four players to raise a total of £100 million to help with summer signings.

The players in question are: Anthony Martial, Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and - surprise, surprise - Luke Shaw.

Martial is something of a fan's favourite at Old Trafford but supporters have been imploring the Frenchman to leave after being granted so little game-time and missing out on France's World Cup squad.

Mourinho believes the winger would be quite the appetising purchase for other clubs, too.

A bid of £70 million would be sufficient for United to sell up with the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea and Juventus interested. If not, the Red Devils will trigger his 12-month contract extension to ensure they continue to attract a large fee for him.

As for Shaw, United will accept any bid in excess of £25 million with Mourinho keen to recoup the fee they paid for the Englishman in 2014.

Meanwhile, Blind and Darmian will be axed for just £14 million each.

While the Martial sale would irk many supporters and a Shaw exit would certainly be sad, there's a feeling that United do need to streamline their squad.

And on a personal level, it's clear that some players simply wouldn't be able to progress under Mourinho right now.

As harsh as the selling process might be, it looks to have big positives for both parties.
