It seems as though a new title contender emerged last night (Sat. May 19, 2018) during UFC's Fight Night 129 event in Santiago, Chile.
The main event of the evening saw Kamaru Usman topple former 170-pound title challenger Demian Maia. He was able to suppress the Brazilian's jiu-jitsu ability for 25 minutes, en-route to securing a unanimous decision victory on the judges' scorecards.
After the fight, Usman, who is undefeated in the UFC said he's tired of calling out fighters as they don't acknowledge his call-outs anymore.
He then said that his social media handle hasn't changed, and that if anyone wants to fight him they know where to find him.
Usman then took to the FOX crew after his victory over Maia, and had some words for UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley - who is also part of the FOX broadcast team.
The Nigerian Nightmare said he's coming for the UFC welterweight title, and nobody can deny that he's now a top five talent in the division (quotes via LowKickMMA):
“Hey, champ: You know my social media hasn’t changed since I got in the game five years ago,” Usman said (transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie).
“Welterweight, and I’m coming for that gold strap. And with that performance, even with some handicaps, no one can deny that I’m definitely top five right now in the division.”
Woodley responded by saying that there are some holes in Usman's game, and saying that he'd be more than happy to exploit those holes if he feels he's ready to step into the cage against him now:
"Kamaru Usman, congratulations,” Woodley said. “I don’t ever want to take away the credit. Demian Maia is a game opponent.
"Me as the champion, I’m always welcoming any challenger. Just make it to that point, I’ll be on the other side of the octagon.
I did see a couple things that if you do against me, you might end up waking up with the smelling salt. But hey, hats off to you. Great job. Just being real.”
What are your thoughts on Woodley's response to Usman's title call-out? Do you think the Nigerian is ready for a shot at Woodley and the welterweight crown? And who do you think would win in a potential match-up between the pair? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments section below!
