Rangers fans were furious over the weekend after a photo emerged which showed their striker Michael O’Halloran sitting with the Celtic fans at Hampden Park on Saturday.

The 27-year-old, who joined the Scottish giants from St Johnstone in 2016, was photographed surrounded by Celtic fans as they celebrated their side’s 2-0 victory over Motherwell in the Scottish Cup final.

Incensed, some Rangers supporters on social media even called for O’Halloran to be sacked by the club.

The former Scotland Under-21 international, who has played just one minute as a substitute for Rangers since returning from a loan spell at former club St Johnstone in January, has apologised to his employers via his agent Kenny Moyes.

According to Moyes, O’Halloran requested a single ticket through the Scottish Football Association and hoped to be in the neutral section. It’s claimed that he wanted to watch Motherwell, who held talks with the forward earlier this year.

“Michael didn’t realise he would be surrounded by Celtic fans but hindsight is a great thing and he now regrets the decision as he accepts it doesn’t look too good,” Moyes is quoted as saying by the Daily Record. “I know he is taking some stick from the Rangers fans but he absolutely wasn’t at Hampden as a Celtic supporter. He’s a Rangers player.

“He is concerned at how it looks to the Rangers supporters but he thought he would be in a neutral section and didn’t realise until it was too late."

'If he knew where he was sitting, he wouldn't have gone'

He added: “Motherwell were keen on signing Michael in January and he requested a ticket for the Cup Final through the SFA to watch the game as a neutral.

“I don’t believe you shouldn’t be allowed to go and watch a game. If he knew where he was going to be sitting then he wouldn’t have gone.

“I requested a ticket through the SFA for the match and I was surrounded by Celtic fans.

"It was hard to get tickets for he game and Motherwell handed some back so the majority of the seats were filled by Celtic fans.”

Chris Sutton posts superb tweet

After reading that O’Halloran had apologised for inadvertently sitting with the Celtic fans at Hampden, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton posted a superb tweet.

“I don’t understand the issue here??” he tweeted. “Some would say it’s nice to see a Rangers player at a cup final this season….”

Few people get more joy out of trolling Rangers as Sutton, whose tweet has gone down extremely well with Celtic fans on the social networking website.

He just couldn’t help himself.
