In what proved to be a surprising turn of events last week, Nia Jax’s opponent in her next RAW Women’s Championship defence at Money in the Bank turned out to be none other than Ronda Rousey.

In a somewhat strange announcement, Jax challenged the former UFC star to a match for her championship, and despite trying to play down the fact that didn’t deserve to be next in line, SmackDown LIVE’s Charlotte Flair goaded her into accepting the challenge.

MONEY IN THE BANK

Since then, a heel turn has been speculated for Jax, while it has also been claimed that the reason Rousey was thrown into the deep end in Chicago next month was because she hasn’t competed since WrestleMania.

Although she’s now been involved in tag team action at live events, the WWE apparently thought that there could be some resentment towards their prized asset if she misses another pay-per-view, while they didn’t want her losing a Money in the Bank qualifying match or even competing in a ladder match so soon.

Now that her first title match has been confirmed, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has revealed that WWE may have created even more problems for themselves with the booking decision.

When speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio last week, Meltzer stated the experience difference between the pair could backfire, Jax might be the wrong opponent for her while there could still be resentment from the fans once the event is over.

PROBLEMS

According to WrestlingNews.co, he said: “You put Ronda Rousey in there with Nia Jax this early, they could have a terrible match.

“Nia Jax is coming off a match against Alexa Bliss that was no good and they’re best friends, and usually, best friends work well together. And I know Ronda Rousey is coming off a match that makes her look better than Alexa Bliss has ever looked in her whole life, but there’s a huge experience difference between the two of them.

“Nia Jax is the wrong opponent, going to the title this early is ridiculous because there’s no chase. So, what do you do about a finish?

“If you put Ronda Rousey over, it’s big news and everything like that. But you didn’t even have the chase, you risk the resentment of some fans - the ‘you deserve it’ fans because they’ll be like, ‘you gave her the championship ahead of so many other women.’ Even though she’s more famous than all of them.”

The world knows it’s a huge risk.

Rousey hasn’t even had a singles match yet in WWE, and opponents like Charlotte or even Natalya would be the ideal singles feuds right now that can make Rousey look unbeatable. So, with this risk, WWE needs to book this feud correctly to avoid stepping on any potential landmines during her first massive singles test.
