Jose Mourinho is 'unconvinced' by Man Utd defence - talks begin with top target

Jose Mourinho has a lot of problems with his Manchester United side, but sorting out the defence may be his top priority this summer.

United's defensive frailties have been exposed at times this year, with David de Gea being forced to make up for mistakes in front of him on multiple occasions.

And the FA Cup final only emphasised the point that they need to strengthen.

Phil Jones was at fault for Chelsea's winner. He was caught out of position, and then clumsily fouled Eden Hazard, who converted the resulting penalty.

But it's not just Jones that has failed to impress.

Chris Smalling and Antonio Valencia have been criticised at numerous points this season.

Ashley Young is a right footed winger playing left-back. Eric Bailly has been frozen out of the team, whereas Victor Lindelof's move from Benfica last season has not materialised.

It's clear Mourinho must spend big to resolve this issue.

So what will Mourinho do?

A report from the Manchester Evening News seems to have the answer.

It is believed that he wants a left-back, a right-back and a centre-back as he remains 'unconvinced' with his back-line.

And the man he is targeting to bolster the centre of defence is Toby Alderweireld.

Mourinho is negotiating with Tottenham over a £55million deal, with Man United 'prepared' to make him their most expensive defensive signing in their history.

The Belgian defender has been wanted by numerous top clubs after being dropped by Tottenham, but it seems Man United are currently leading the race for his signature.

It is believed that Spurs are resigned to losing him and are happy to let him go to free up funds for Mauricio Pochettino.

He will not come cheap, but it could be a worthy investment.

At 29 years old, Man United will be getting someone in their prime that can make serious contributions in defence.

Alderweireld will be a massive upgrade on what they currently possess, while he would also install some much needed leadership into the team.

If Mourinho manages to get the deal over the line it would be a terrific signing for the club.
