French defender Francois Clerc is nearing a move to England, with West Ham believed to be close to gaining his signature.

Clerc is out of contract after being released by Lyon, and he now looks likely to pen a deal to take him to Upton Park.

The full-back has been capped by his country 13 times and, should he make the move to east London, will compete for a starting berth in the Hammers side with compatriot Julien Faubert.

The 27-year-old spent nine seasons with Lyon and is understood to have been a target for former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez last summer, but he opted to splash out on England right-back Glen Johnson instead.

Clerc's agent Frederic Guerra told Sky Sports:

"I have spoken to three or four teams about Francois and West Ham are one of those teams,

"After speaking to these teams I am now waiting for their responses.

"There has been a strong interest in Francois as he is a free agent and he is one of the best free transfers around as he has played for France and played in the Champions League.

"Francois likes England and I think he would be a success in England so hopefully we can find an agreement."
