Although the 2017-18 Premier League campaign has only just finished, you can already get odds on which club will win next season’s title.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are currently the 4/6 favourites, unsurprisingly, followed by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at 9/2.
That might be because the Reds have a head-start on every other Premier League club in terms of summer signings. Naby Keita agreed to join the Merseyside outfit last August and the energetic Guinea midfielder, who arrives from RB Leipzig, is expected to seriously strengthen Klopp’s starting XI.
But that’s not the only reason why the bookmakers’ rate Liverpool as more likely 2018-19 Premier League winners than the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal.
Liverpool will be champions of Europe by Saturday night if they defeat Real Madrid in Kiev. Win or lose, though, reaching the Champions League final will give them a huge confidence boost going into next season.
It’s expected to be announced that Emre Can will leave Liverpool for Juventus this summer but Keita’s arrival will soften that particular blow.
Klopp has already identified which players he wants to try and sign this summer, according to the Independent, and three of them already ply their trade in the Premier League.
The two PL defenders Klopp is keen on signing
The first is Burnley defender James Tarkowski, the 25-year-old who made his international debut for England against Italy in March.
The Manchester-born centre-back played in 31 league games this season for Burnley, who finished the season seventh in the Premier League table.
Klopp clearly wants a new first-choice centre-back partner for Virgil van Dijk because the German coach is also interested in signing Newcastle United’s excellent young defender Jamaal Lascelles. The 24-year-old Englishman, who is yet to represent his country at senior level, has enjoyed a superb season under Rafael Benitez at St James’ Park.
Klopp and the Liverpool transfer committee reportedly feel Tarkowski and Lascelles fit what they want and will try to sign one of them during the close-season.
Butland could also join
The third Premier League player – for the time being, anyway – on Liverpool’s summer wish-list is Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland.
The 25-year-old is expected to leave the Potters following their relegation to the Championship and would surely be tempted by the prospect of competing with Loris Karius for the number one jersey at Anfield.
Butland is one of three goalkeepers that Gareth Southgate has included in his 23-man England squad alongside Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Burnley’s Nick Pope.
The Independent claim that another attacker could join Liverpool over the coming weeks, although they’re not yet sure who that might be.
It’s possible that it will be Lyon’s Nabil Fekir, who has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield this month.
