Manchester United lacked any real attacking impetus in their defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday. The team struggled to create any chances of note as they were unable to find a way past Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea goal.A major reason why they struggled could be down to the absence of Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker suffered an ankle injury in April and faced a race against time to be fit for the final at Wembley. He was chosen start on the bench - with Marcus Rashford starting in his place.

MURPHY TEARS INTO LUKAKU

Jose Mourinho revealed after the game that Lukaku had told him directly that he was not fit to start.

Danny Murphy heard that revelation and has not taken it very well at all.

He's dropped a truth bomb about Lukaku, which makes for very interesting reasoning.

"I’ve never once, in my whole career, said that I can’t play when asked if I could - unless I physically can’t run about," he said on TalkSPORT.

“I’ve played with all sorts [of injuries].

“Some players feel like they have to be 100% to play. If that were the case, I’d never play.

“United fans must be absolutely fuming if that’s true.”

Murphy went on to argue that if Lukaku was fit enough for a place on the bench, he was fit enough for a place in the starting line-up.

“If he’s got something pretty bad and thinks he’s struggling, you can’t go on the bench.

“What if Marcus Rashford had come off? The manager should’ve said to him ‘you’re starting, if you can’t start then don’t go on the bench'.

“He’s trying to show him up. He’s saying ‘look, he’s chosen not to play’. That’s massive for me because I’ve never heard of that in such a big game,” Murphy said.

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard him say it.

“The World Cup is weeks away, he's got time and a game is good for fitness.

“I think Lukaku is going to have a big question mark over his head now no matter what happens at the World Cup."

Well said, Danny.

Lukaku showed no signs of being injured after he was introduced in the 72nd minute.

If he really wasn't fit enough to play the full 90, why didn't he start from the off and then come off when he was too tired?

It was Manchester United's biggest game of the season. He had the chance to help his side to a FA Cup triumph but instead chose to sit on the bench.

Baffling.

The majority of Man United fans have agreed with Murphy, with many expressing their frustration at the Belgian striker.
