Sunderland fans must've been jumping for joy on the final day of the Championship season.

Not because their side had managed to seal promotion back to the Premier League, but because they now had the summer months to take a break from the god awful football at the Stadium of Light in 2017/18.

Sunderland will be in League One next season having finished rock bottom of the table, mustering only seven wins all season - two fewer than the nearest competitor, Barnsley.

In recent days, the club had a little bit of positive news as Stewart Donald's takeover of the club was announced, with the English businessman fronting up £40m to pay off the debt amassed by Ellis Short.

A new project is currently being built at the club, which really was the only thing left to do after 2017/18's disaster.

Donald's first big decision is appointing the new manager, with the new owner saying he wants it all sorted in seven days.

"We are obviously going to start looking through that process and we would hope seven days maximum, I would think before we have a new manager," he said, per Sunderland Echo.

St Mirren's Jack Ross and Michael Appleton are two candidates being heavily linked with the job, but the third party who is in the running sums up what a god awful mess the club are in.

In a report by the Mirror, the Donald and the Black Cats would be more than willing to rehire Chris Coleman, just three weeks after he given the boot by Short.

Coleman - who excelled as manager of the Welsh national team - is also said to be very interested in the new project being put in place by Donald.

While he's certainly a very capable manager, rehiring someone who failed to keep the club in the Championship and was then sacked doesn't look great, does it?

You can bet Newcastle fans will be having a right ol' giggle at their bitter rivals and not for the first time this year...
