Out of nowhere, Arsenal look set to appoint Unai Emery. It looked certain that the Gunners would make former midfielder Mikel Arteta their new boss but, suddenly, reports emerged that Emery is set to be announced.Emery revealed last month he will leave Paris Saint-German with his contract expiring at the end of the season.Previously, the Spaniard led Sevilla to three consecutive Europa League titles from 2014 to 2016.One negative is the 46-year-old doesn’t speak fluent English. But it’s fair to say Emery’s impending arrival has split opinion. Some Gooners are delighted - some Gooners are far from convinced.
THE TWITTER THREAD ON UNAI EMERY
But a Twitter threat from La Liga expert David Cartlidge is being shared on social media - and it makes for fascinating reading.
It starts off: “Let’s talk about Emery…”
What follows are eight tweets that will make Arsenal fans extremely worried.
Involved in the thread are tweets such as: “Overall, Emery an underwhelming appointment, doesn't really profess good or winning football. Too pragmatic, dogged by stubbornness with his systems.”
And what can the Arsenal players expect? Lots and lots of video sessions by the sounds of it.
“Get ready for the video sessions, Arsenal players. And lots of them. Joaquin’s famous anecdote is that ‘Emery played so many videos, I ran out of popcorn’. Can exhaust players, suck out their motivation etc,” Cartlidge wrote.
But what about his in-game management?
Errrrr, that’s not too good either, apparently.
“Often guilty of poor in-game management. Few coaches can snatch a loss or draw from the jaws of victory like Emery. Let’s not even get on to what happens when he faces teams that go down to ten men.”
But he will surely bring some much-need discipline that was sorely lacking with Arsene Wenger?
“In terms of discipline, we are talking about a severe lack of authority. Valencia players walked all over them, and he was not even dealing with stars. At PSG, notoriously passive. Wonder how long it will take Arsenal squad to figure it out.”
Oh dear.
Arsenal fans will just be hoping Carlidge has got it all wrong…
