Just when it looked as Mikel Arteta would be announced as the next Arsenal manager, reports broke claiming it will be Unai Emery instead.

It’s believed that Arteta’s lack of experience had a big impact on the decision but for the club to suddenly change to Emery came as a massive shock.

Emery will be leaving Paris Saint-Germain having won the treble with the French club but his contract wasn’t renewed at the Parc des Princes.

Before that, he won three consecutive Europa Leagues with Sevilla.

It’s certainly not a bad CV.

However, there are plenty of Arsenal fans that remain unconvinced.

Perhaps it’s the sudden U-turn that has got Gooners on edge.

IAN WRIGHT HAS REACTED TO THE REPORTS

At least that seems to be the case as far as Arsenal legend Ian Wright is concerned.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Wright has summed up Arsenal’s search for their new manager - and their impending appointment of Emery.

“It’s like they’re at the sushi shop,” Wright said.

“You know the stuff that’s just going past? Yeah, I’ll have that. I’ll take that. I’ll leave them ones. No, I’ll take that one now.

“What’s going on at Arsenal? Where’s Unai Emery come from? I can’t get it out of my head.

“You’d have thought that by now they would have known exactly what’s going on. Unai Emery’s now the favourite, he’s going to be the manager?

“Good luck to him if he comes in and gets it. I’ll back him. The fact is you just want people upstairs to be decisive with what they’re doing. I think they’ve had the time. This is the problem I’ve got.”

Wright has got a point.

With the Arsenal board seemingly pushing Wenger out of a job, you’d think they had the perfect replacement already in mind.

However, to go from almost appointing one candidate to now seemingly being set on a completely different alternative, it suggests they don’t really know what they’re looking for.

Of course, Emery is a very talented coach and could yet turn out to be a really good appointment.

But it seems Arsenal have stumbled upon his appointment, rather than thinking long and hard about it.
