Considering we’re now in 2018, wrestling fans have probably seen some rather strange signings over the years - some that have managed to work out and some that haven’t quite lived up to the ‘hype.’
In the WWE, you’ll usually see those signings down in NXT. We’ve had former NFL names in Baron Corbin and Mojo Rawley now plying their trade on the main roster, or if you’re looking at names on a much bigger scale, then Ronda Rousey’s switch from the UFC to WWE might be considered the most significant coup of all time.
However, some of the strangest signings will arguably come from the world of professional football, or soccer. Based on the track record WWE has had, they don’t bring a great deal of success compared to the American version of football.
For example, former Burton Albion goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson swapped the pitch for the squared circle when he was signed by WWE, adopting the name Hugo Knox with many expecting big things from him - before he was released.
On a bigger scale, former Germany international Tim Wiese also swapped the goalkeeper position for a shot in the WWE, helping Sheamus and Cesaro defeat The Shining Stars and Bo Dallas during a live event in Munich.
However, in what might be one of the most bizarre moves yet, current SmackDown LIVE general manager Paige’s parents have signed a former Premier League striker to their UK wrestling promotion, World Association of Wrestling.
Revealing the news on Twitter, former Norwich City striker Grant Holt is confirmed to be making an appearance at the Fightmare 3 Supershow next year, with Holt donning the Norwich kit and standing in between both of Paige’s brothers Roy and Zak Knight of the UK Hooligans.
Despite confirming an appearance for the Fightmare 3 event, the promotion is teasing that he could make several surprise appearances before then, while Holt even teased a wrestling switch on his Instagram account before the news was confirmed.
Those who have seen him play will know that he might not look too out of place inside of a wrestling ring for the Norwich-based promotion, primarily because he’s on the larger side and of a burly stature, which is always a good sign when you’re trying to look like the star attraction.
The move is bound to draw plenty of attention, not only because of Holt signing with the promotion but because The Rock is making a movie - Fighting With My Family - which is a film about Paige and her family which will be released in March 2019, so the timing of it all is quite fitting.
