For better or for worse, it seems Arsenal are ready to appoint Unai Emery as their new manager.
Fans would be mistaken for thinking that Mikel Arteta was nailed on to replace Arsene Wenger but a report in the Daily Mail on Sunday started to unravel a series of revelations. It quickly emerged that Emery had leapt into pole position at the very last minute.
The Independent went into great detail as to why, in the end, Arsenal opted for Emery over Arteta.
Ivan Gazidis, Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi eventually came to the conclusion that Emery's vast experience was the most important factor.
Arteta greatly impressed during all of his interviews and ticked many of the boxes for the job, but his absence of past experience in the hot seat sparked concerns.
Emery beat Arteta to the job
The former Arsenal player doesn't even lead sessions at Manchester City, after all.
It's even revealed that Arsenal took fan reaction into consideration with the selection of Emery. They feared that the selection of someone so unproven as Arteta would quickly receive a backlash.
That was probably an accurate assumption, although not all supporters are blown away by the selection.
How Arsenal players reacted
His capture of three consecutive Europa League titles at Sevilla and recent quadruple-winning season with Paris Saint-Germain serve as pretty hefty reassurances.
However, what do you the players think of the impending appointment?
Considering reports had circulated that the squad had been told Arteta was all but confirmed as their new manager, yesterday's news must have sparked an interesting response and that seems to be exactly the case.
According to the Daily Mail, the overriding emotion amongst the squad was one of shock.
The report revealed: "News of Emery's imminent appointment was met with shock by players on Monday night, who had fully expected Arteta to be in charge next season."
Not ideal, it must be said.
While the club shouldn't be expected to keep every employee updated on their hunt for a new manager, it's a little worrying that the Emery news has caught them completely off guard.
Whether or not they prefer the idea of Arteta or Emery, though, is unknown.
At least the players will have their holidays and a World Cup to digest the appointment before getting to know their new manager across pre-season.
Everyone at the club will be hoping the Spaniard can return them to the Champions League and even Premier League contention sooner rather than later.
