Jamie Carragher speaks the truth about Steven Gerrard making Rangers SPL challengers

Steven Gerrard has a hefty task on his hands as he looks to reinstall Rangers as Scotland's top club.

Celtic are currently the dominant team in the country and are significantly better than their city rivals.

Brendan Rodgers ensured the club won their seventh consecutive SPL title this season, while also leading them to the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup.

The two sides met five times this season, with Celtic winning four of those and the other ending in a draw.

The gulf of class between the two clubs was evident in their last two fixtures, both of which occurred in April, ending 4-0 and 5-0 to The Bhoys.

Rangers' season ended extremely poorly, but there has been a wave of optimism at the Ibrox Stadium with the appointment of Gerrard.

Many believe that Gerrard could be the man to topple Celtic's dominance in Scottish football.

But it won't be easy.

Jamie Carragher has now dropped the brutal truth about Gerrard at Rangers.

In Carragher's view, it doesn't matter how good a manager his long-time Liverpool teammate proves to be, he will not even be able to compete with Celtic if he doesn't get sufficient backing in the transfer market.

"It’s always been difficult for Rangers with the financial implications," Carragher told the Daily Record.

“No matter how good Steven is as a manager - and we don’t know yet - he will still need help financially to try and compete with Brendan and Celtic.”

Well said, Jamie.

Rangers are unbelievably far behind Celtic: the results in their meetings in April prove that.

Not even Pep Guardiola will be able to transform that Rangers side into SPL challengers.

Gerrard needs backing. Only then will he have any hopes of even competing with Celtic.

Carragher added that Gerrard's move to Rangers was brilliant for Scottish football as a whole.

“Steven has signed a four-year deal," he stated. "Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think people are expecting Rangers to win the league next season, but certainly they need to be more competitive against Celtic.

“It’s a brilliant move for Scottish football and it makes things a lot more interesting in terms of the Old Firm now.

“Hopefully, from Steven’s point of view, they’ll be able to overhaul them.

“Brendan has done brilliant up there. It was brilliant him going there in the first place up at Celtic."
