Arsenal have a new head coach for the first time in 22 years.

After a prolonged period of deliberation and names from all across Europe being linked with the job, Unai Emery was given the seal of approval by the board.

Mikel Arteta appeared to be the favourite, while another ex-Arsenal man Patrick Vieira was also in the mix, but Ivan Gazidis opted for a man with copious amounts of experience at the highest level.

Emery has taken charge of Valencia, Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Paris Saint-Germain in what has been a very trophy-laden career.

Despite losing the dressing room in the French capital, he still managed to win five trophies, which is still not easy even with PSG's financial power.

So there is certainly cause for optimism among Arsenal supporters, although, the Spaniard needs to be given time to settle in the English capital.

And to help himself with is new role, Goal report that Emery has already spoken to the man he has replaced; Arsene Wenger.

The Frenchman has always put the club first during his time and it turns out he offered Emery some solid advice.

Arsenal's new boss asked what areas of the squad need strengthening the most and Wenger has told him to address the defence.

It seems a no-brainer, but it also begs the question that if the 68-year-old was aware of the state of the defence, why didn't he address it himself?

The majority of transfer rumours surrounding the Gunners so far have been defenders, with the future of Shkodran Mustafi being called into question numerous times.

The German endured a tough season, with Borussia Dortmund's Sokratis and Freiburg's Caglar Soyuncu being heavily linked with the summer moves to either replace or help out Mustafi.

Soyuncu may end up costing the club around £35m, which would be a significant amount of their supposed summer budget of £50m gone in one move.

You feel the club are preparing to offload a lot of players to compensate.
