It simply doesn’t matter what the WWE tries with Roman Reigns, they just can’t seem to get him to resonate with the audience so that they finally embrace him.
This would end up making him the face of the company; something they’ve wanted for a long time. But the toxic backlash they continue to receive whenever The Big Dog is mentioned means the blueprint the WWE has created will need to be amended over and over to finally succeed in their plans for the former Shield member.
The answer the majority of fans will say is that he needs to turn heel - it’s something legends like Stone Cold Steve Austin have also said needs to happen so he can become a more prominent face down the line.
WWE hasn’t pulled the trigger on that yet, though, as they’ve tried many things to try and get him cheered. These include getting the fans to try and turn on Brock Lesnar, having Reigns feud with Jinder Mahal and most recently, bringing Seth Rollins into the fold.
The dissent towards Reigns is still there. However, one unlikely superstar has leapt to Reigns’ defence as the Gorilla Position podcast recently caught up with The Miz to discuss Reigns’ booking - someone who was greeted as the face by the audience during his feud with The Big Dog.
He revealed that nobody likes the out-and-out good guys anymore - which Reigns isn’t - and claimed that he must be doing something right if the younger audience loves him along with the fact that he sells the most merchandise, despite the negativity surrounding him.
According to IW Nerd, he said: “He’s selling the most merch out of anybody.
“People are going to sit there and go, ‘Well, he should be here, he shouldn’t be doing this.’ Nobody knows. Nobody has a scientific formula to being the most ‘over’ superstar in all the WWE.
“The hardcore fans will sit there and go, ‘Oh well, you know, they’re shoving him down our throats. How dare you do that? Blah, blah blah.’ But I guarantee there are kids out there that sit down and look at him - there are women out there that go, ‘Oh my God.’
“Nobody likes the good ol’ fashioned Superman, you know? Nobody wants that anymore. Everyone wants that blend of grey.”
It’s no secret that Reigns appeals to the younger fans, who arguably make up for his merchandise sales being so high.
Although he’s going through a sticky patch right now, the WWE has stuck with him this far so it doesn’t seem like they’ll ultimately give up on him any time soon either, especially with his peers coming to his defence.
