What Jose Mourinho recently said to his Man United players in a 'fiery address'

Football News

Despite comfortably securing Champions League football, Manchester United ended the 2017/18 season on an awful note.

Jose Mourinho's Red Devils - who were knocked out the Champions League by Sevilla in March - were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday evening.

They struggled to create any clear-cut chances at Wembley but the enigmatic Man United coach didn't believe his team deserved to lose.

“I congratulated them because they won but I don’t think they deserved to win,” Mourinho said.

“I congratulated them because I am a sportsman. They scored one more goal than us and they got the cup and so I’ve got to do what my job asks me to do.

“I think we deserved to win, I think we were the best team, but that’s football.”

Mourinho reportedly didn't address his players after the FA Cup final defeat - but an angry speech did occur in the build-up to the final.

Mourinho's fiery address

Growing frustrated with the performances towards the end of the season, Mourinho addressed the Man United players.

"Back me or leave" is what Mourinho told them, as per The Sun.

The Sun claim that the Portuguese coach gave "a fiery address to the misfiring stars, in front of first-team staff, telling them that anyone who wanted to leave the club could go.

"Mourinho also made it clear he was doing things his way whether they liked it or not — and that he was there to succeed."

Vintage Mourinho.

The former Chelsea boss has been heavily criticised in the aftermath of the final but Man United fans on Twitter - who undoubtedly miss the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson - seemed to quite enjoy his aggressive speech.

Mourinho failed to win any silverware this season but signed a new deal in January which ties him to the club until 2020.

He is expected to undertake a massive overhaul at Old Trafford this summer.

Club-record signing Paul Pogba is one of the names who has been linked with a move away - but Michael Carrick is having none of it.

"It’s a very silly question, really," Carrick told Sky Sports when asked if Pogba had a future at Old Trafford.

"Of course he’s got a future, he’s a big player for us, he’s at a great age, he’s got his peak years ahead of him, so it’s not something I’d give a second thought to, to be honest."

Pogba will likely end up staying but you can be sure that it will be a very interesting transfer window at Man United.
