Fernando Alonso has led an interesting Formula One career to say the least.
The Spaniard was once tipped to be the greatest the sport has seen after securing back-to-back world titles in 2005 and 2006 with Renault, setting records for being both the youngest F1 world champions and the youngest double world champion.
A move to McLaren in 2007 was ill-fated and halted his career dramatically - Alonso hasn't lifted the drivers' championship since.
Alonso had left McLaren after just one year but went back for the 2015 season.
Still there, he hasn't managed to live up to the high standards he once set himself but is currently on course to secure his best season in years.
He's secured points in every race, although is yet to take a podium position, and things are looking up for the driver.
And speaking ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, Alonso believes McLaren have no excuses for not aiming even higher this season.
McLaren made a big change ahead of the season this year - moving away from engine manufacturer Honda and instead signing a three-year deal with Renault.
"I think it will depend on us," Alonso said. "It's not like in the past [with Honda] when we needed a mix of a lot of things to get it right.
"We were missing reliability, we were missing race pace, and sometimes deployment, sometimes aero, sometimes mechanical grip - there were many things to fix.
“Now we know that on the power unit side we have the same engines as Red Bull, so it's all on us, the chassis development, to close that gap.
"We are motivated to do that. We are in the right direction. I think the new package is delivering what we expect from it.
"That's always a good boost in confidence for everyone in the factory, for all the plans they have for the next races.
"We know we are in the right direction - let's see what we can do during the season.
“We need to score points every Sunday. We've been doing that quite good so far."
The 36-year-old is certainly talking the talk - time will tell if he can help steer McLaren back to where they want to be.
