This week’s episode of Monday Night RAW kicked off with almost a complete hour of non-stop action featuring Roman Reigns.

Kurt Angle might have kicked off the proceedings, but the return of Stephanie McMahon is what seemed to irk The Big Dog the most. It also didn’t sit too well with the fans, as their refusal to throw Reigns into the Money in the Bank match saw him use the angle that management is holding him back and don’t want him becoming the Universal Champion.

OPENING SEGMENT

In reality, it’s the complete opposite, and they can’t wait for that to happen. However, one thing during the opening segment which either had fans confused or in laughter was when Kevin Owens decided to get involved.

In his usual braggadocious manner, he talked up his own chances of winning Money in the Bank before resting his arm on Stephanie’s shoulder, angering her to the extent where she booked a match between Reigns and Owens.

The whole situation was brought up by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer as not everyone would be happy to see Owens talked down to like that, especially be a fellow heel.

While voicing his displeasure at the segment, he revealed that this was done merely to get Stephanie over as a more significant heel than Owens - something that didn’t need to be done.

According to Ringside News, he said: “What was the need for that?

HEELS

"I mean Kevin Owens is [a] semi-top heel, not number one heel but certainly main event heel, he’s main event every single house show. Why does she need to emasculate him? She’s already over she’s a McMahon. I know how it’s scripted, but it’s stupid. Don’t make the wrestlers out to be freaking peons.

“If it added to something, and there was a positive to it I would be like, ‘Yeah whatever,' but this is like — and it’s not her it’s the writers, and it’s Vince who’s writing the character.

“But it’s like if Stephanie is going to be a heel then backing down a heel doesn’t help her be a heel and backing down a heel doesn’t help the heel get more heat and be more menacing, he’s backing down to a woman. It’s like, isn’t he supposed to be kind of something, kind of a main eventer?

“It doesn’t help Stephanie. It waters her down if anything because she backed down a heel and Kevin, **** it does nothing for him.”

Upon reflection, WWE might have been better off entirely avoiding that part of the segment, as it certainly didn’t make Owens seem like the top heel on the roster, which he should be.

Obviously, the whole authoritative aspect plays into it as Owens has had issues on both RAW and SmackDown LIVE with management. But it’s also clear that stunts like these do take something menacing away from Owens while the importance will be on keeping Stephanie looking untouchable.

Although, this is the same man who hit Vince with a headbutt in the middle of the ring before landing a frog splash on him.
