Roger Federer has long since established himself as possibly the greatest tennis player of all time.

The Swiss maestro has a staggering 20 Grand Slam titles under his belt with his last victory coming at the Australian Open in January.

However, at 36-years of age, Federer has sadly had to limit the amount of tennis he plays, choosing to give the entire 2018 clay court season a miss, to focus on his beloved grass court play.

Federer just seems to have gone on forever, and based on his current form, looks like he could still go on for a good while longer.

But who is the GOAT?

The debate over who can claim to be the greatest of all time has raged for many a year now since the emergence of Novak Djokovic and, in particular, Rafael Nadal.

The belligerent Spaniard has enjoyed a storming season on clay, winning just about everything he can lay his sight on and is the undisputed favourite to lift an incredible 11th title at Roland Garros in a couple of weeks time.

That would take his tally of major titles to 17 as he hunts down the evergreen Swiss.

Federer has never been fond of the debate surrounding his status as possibly the greatest tennis star to have ever lived, but with the second Slam of the year rapidly approaching, the Fed has finally an interesting perspective on who deserves the title.

“Serena Williams has been fascinating to watch. She had a totally different upbringing – I came up through Switzerland with the federation, she did it with her dad and her sister,”

“It’s an amazing story unto itself – and then she became one of the greatest, if not the greatest tennis player of all time.”

When asked whether he meant the greatest female player or overall, he replied:

“Overall.”

And he’s not wrong .

Williams has dominated women’s tennis for what feels like an age and is well deserving of praise from reigning Wimbledon champion.

The American has an astounding 23 major titles to her name, and will be desperate to add to them as she slowly makes her return to the court following a lengthy lay off.

Williams is set to compete in Paris over the next few weeks, but will be unseeded when she takes to the courts of the French capital.

Can she add to her already burgeoning trophy cabinet?
