Despite doing incredible business for WWE from a business perspective, WWE fans just can’t seem to stand the Stephanie McMahon character.
One one side, you could argue that Stephanie is playing her character perfectly as her job is to draw heat while getting anyone standing opposite her plenty of cheers.
On the flip side, fans seem to be continuously disgruntled that she manages to worm her way into segments when she doesn’t need to be there, meaning she’s taking the limelight from other superstars.
More often than not, that annoyance revolves around the fact that she’s always the first in line when talk turns to the women’s revolution, often being the focal point when the WWE is making some huge announcements.
Earlier this week, she drew criticism for burying Kevin Owens on the microphone, which was reportedly a decision by the creative team so that Stephanie remains the biggest heel in the ring at the time.
However, Stephanie can prove to be very useful, as was the case in one particular segment this week on RAW.
The Backstage in WWE podcast has revealed that Stephanie was persistent in wanting to look over the contract signing segment between Nia Jax and Ronda Rousey - a gig initially meant for Kurt Angle.
The source has revealed that Stephanie was given the green light to be in the segment because, without her, the promos by Nia Jax and Rousey wouldn’t have been great, and she was basically in that position to save it from being a trainwreck.
According to Ringside News, the source said: “But they needed her on the segment, especially with the Ronda and Nia thing because the promos and contract signing would have been terrible without her. So, it was smart in that regard.”
The fact is, Stephanie knows how to talk and in the end, it did prove to be a good decision even if it still does feel like she could be hogging the limelight during significant moments.
WWE can’t risk having Rousey in any poor segment when she’s their prized asset.
By having Stephanie in that role, she was able to protect both women and keep them looking strong, rather than having fans speak negatively about the WWE’s most significant signing in history or one of their top champions.
In that regard, it’s a good job Stephanie was there.
