The Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics will need a Game 7 to decide the Eastern Conference Finals as the series is tied at 3-3 with both teams protecting their home court.

The Cavs faced elimination in Friday night's Game 6 but secured a 109-99 victory to keep their season alive.

LeBron James once again put Cleveland on his back and produced a sensational performance to force one final game in Boston.

The King posted an astonishing 46 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists as he played 46 minutes.

But if the final encounter is to be in keeping with the entire series, the Celtics are the overwhelming favourites to advance to the NBA Finals as the home team has won every game.

The C's, in particular, are terrific at home and have gone a perfect 10-0 throughout this postseason - tying an NBA record.

They already managed to overcome the Milwaukee Bucks in a Game 7 at home in the first round and will be hoping for a similar outcome against the Cavaliers.

But this will be a different challenge altogether as they'll be facing the best player on the planet who has dominated the east for the last seven years, making it to seven straight finals.

That incredible streak will be on the line on Sunday night against a hungry young team determined to dethrone King James.

Battle

Celtics guard Marcus Smart has warned the Cavs that the deciding encounter will be a "dogfight" and expects a real battle.

"It's about just winning the game now," Marcus Smart said, per ESPN's Chris Forsberg. "It's not going to be pretty. You got to be able to get down and get dirty. You can't go out and try to look pretty. You have to be ready for a dogfight.

"We got to be ready to come up with our nose bloodied, we got to be ready to come out with our mouth bloodied, we have to come out ready to fight."

Boston has been outstanding at TD Garden throughout the playoffs and has truly made use of their home-court advantage.

They blew the Cavs out in two of their three meetings in Boston in the series already and they should be favourites to win the game.

It's tough to bet against LeBron as he's produced heroic performances to save his season on multiple occasions in that famous arena, but unless he gets major contributions from his role players, he'll find it tough to get a win this time.

But the stage is set for a classic Game 7 in a win or go home scenario as both teams prepare to leave everything out on the court.
