Loris Karius would be best off avoiding social media for a good week or two following Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday night.

Just type the German goalkeeper’s name into Twitter and the tweets either mocking or abusing him are endless.

It’s worth remembering that Karius is only human, like every other footballer. Imagine how crushed he must be feeling after costing his team two goals in the biggest match of his career.

It will take a long, long time for the 24-year-old to recover from this performance.

It might even be the end of his Liverpool career.

"I don't feel anything right now. Today I lost my team the game and I feel sorry for everyone,” he told talkSPORT in a heartbreaking interview after the match.

"I'm sorry for everyone - from the team, from the whole club - that the mistakes cost dearly.”

What Carragher did when he saw Karius

One man who knows precisely what it feels like to have the whole world against you is former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

The 40-year-old, who made the front pages of Britain’s tabloids earlier this year following the unfortunate spitting incident which resulted in Sky Sports suspending him until the end of the season, was at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kiev on Saturday night working for an overseas television channel.

Presumably gutted after the final whistle, he was on the sidelines as Liverpool’s players made their way back to the dressing room after the match.

Carragher spotted Karius and, to his immense credit, went up the goalkeeper and consoled him. Watch it here...

Pure class from Carragher

Pure class from the Liverpool legend, who had interviewed the former Germany Under-21 international earlier in the week.

To know that he has the support of a club legend like Carragher, who has not been afraid to blast various under-performing Liverpool players on live TV in the past, will mean a lot to Karius.

Despite that, though, it’s hard to imagine that Karius will still be Liverpool’s first-choice keeper next season.

The Reds have recently been linked to Stoke City’s Jack Butland and AS Roma’s Alisson Becker.
