Real Madrid are the champions of Europe for a 13th time after a thrilling 3-1 victory over Liverpool.
Saturday night’s contest in Kiev had everything but it will be remembered for two people: Loris Karius and Gareth Bale.
One had a night to remember; the other had a night to forget.
Bale started on the bench but he came on in the second half and made an immediate impact with a stunning overhead kick.
Karius was helpless to prevent Bale’s first goal but he was at fault for the Welshman’s second, fumbling a long-range shot into the net.
One of the most important moments of the match was the injury that forced Mohamed Salah off in the first half.
The Egyptian, Liverpool’s best player this season, was hauled down by Sergio Ramos in the 26th minute and dislocated his shoulder, according to reports.
Liverpool fans slam Ramos
Many believe Ramos purposely injured Salah by locking arms and then rolling on the Liverpool man to make it worse.
But if that wasn’t enough to frustrate Liverpool supporters, then the sight of Ramos laughing and joking with the assistant referee as Salah walked off the pitch in tears certainly did.
It rubbed salt in the wounds as Liverpool had to play the majority of the game without Salah.
Check out the reaction from a number of upset Liverpool supporters.
It’s merely the sight of Ramos smiling that has done it.
Clearly, the Real Madrid centre-back wasn’t too cut up about causing a serious injury to an opponent.
Liverpool made the better start to the match but Salah’s injury changed the momentum of the match.
They weren’t quite as threatening with Adam Lallana on the pitch and when Liverpool needed to be resolute in defence, Karius gifted Los Blancos two goals.
It was a disappointing way for Liverpool’s season to end and Jurgen Klopp expressed his sadness at full-time.
“I’m not fine, I’m the opposite of fine, but I try to be professional,” Klopp, who has now lost six out of seven cup finals, said.
“I said it a few times, I’m turning 51 next month or so, I lost games in my life before, I won games in my life before – I know how to deal with that.
“What you cannot avoid is the feeling you have the night after the game.
“We all feel really, really bad, and the way home will not be the best trip we ever had in our life but we have to accept it now.
“We wanted everything and got nothing, or minus something with the injury of Mo.”
