Football can be a cruel, cruel sport at times. Just ask Loris Karius. The German goalkeeper will never, ever forget the two mistakes which effectively cost him and his Liverpool teammates a Champions League winners’ medal this weekend.Karius’s inexplicable blunders handed two goals to Real Madrid, who secured a 3-1 victory over Jurgen Klopp’s side in Kiev on Saturday evening.“I don’t feel anything right now. Today I lost my team the game,” Karius said after the match in a heartbreaking interview with talkSPORT. “I feel sorry for everyone. I’m sorry for everyone, for the team, for the whole club. The mistakes cost us dearly.“If I could go back in time I would. I just feel sorry for my team. I know I let them down today."It is very hard right now, but that is the life of a goalkeeper. You have got to get your head up again. For now, I’m just really sorry for everyone that those goals cost us the title basically.”Some of the abuse directed towards Karius on social media following the Champions League final has been nothing short of disgraceful. It should never be forgotten that, like the rest of us, he’s only human.

What Crouch tweeted after Karius's second mistake

This might explain why former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch deleted the tweet that he posted after Karius’s second mistake of the night, which saw Gareth Bale make it 3-1 to the Spanish giants with a speculative long-range effort.

Shortly after the ball crossed the line thanks to Karius’s woeful attempt at a save, Crouch simply tweeted: “Reina”.

This was clearly a reference to Pepe Reina, who has been linked with a return to Anfield in recent weeks.

The 35-year-old, however, is poised to leave Napoli to become Gianluigi Donnarumma’s back-up at AC Milan.

Deleting the tweet was understandable

Crouch clearly believes the veteran keeper, who will travel to Russia this summer as part of Spain’s World Cup squad, would still be a better option now than Karius.

That Crouch deleted his tweet, however, suggests he felt guilty and regretted posting it in the first place.

As a professional footballer, he will be acutely aware of what Karius is probably going through right now.

Deleting the tweet was probably the kindest thing to do, although he won’t be the only Liverpool fan wondering if Karius’s Liverpool career is now over.
