Real Madrid further cemented their status as the most successful club side in European football history by winning yet another Champions League title on Saturday night.Zinedine Zidane’s team, who have now won the European Cup three seasons on the bounce, sealed the prestigious trophy for the 13th time with a 3-1 victory over Liverpool in Kiev. They now have six more European Cups than AC Milan, the second most successful team in Champions League history, and eight more than Barcelona, Liverpool and Bayern Munich. What Zidane has achieved with Real Madrid’s current group of players in this competition since taking the reins in January 2016 is nothing short of extraordinary. It will be talked about for many years to come and rightly so.Despite their success in Europe, however, it wasn’t a vintage season for Los Blancos domestically. They finished third in La Liga this term, three points behind neighbours Atletico and a massive 17 points behind fierce rivals Barcelona.

Puyol's tweet after Madrid's latest CL win goes viral

But winning the Champions League is widely regarded a bigger achievement and watching Cristiano Ronaldo and co. lift the European Cup for the third year in a row would have hurt those at the Camp Nou.

Even though he doesn’t play for Barça these days, retired defender Carles Puyol is still a passionate Culé.

The former Barça captain posted a tweet that deserves complete respect after Real Madrid’s latest triumph - and it’s gone viral.

"Congratulations Madridistas, four Champions Leagues in five seasons against one of the best Barcelona teams in history, we must reflect on our priorities," he tweeted.

Barça have won the CL once in the past seven years

Puyol said what a lot of Barcelona supporters must be feeling right now.

How can Barça, with their array of world-class stars, only have won the Champions League once in the past seven years?

There have been so many missed opportunities since then, not least this season when they somehow crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage despite thrashing AS Roma 4-1 in the first leg.

One Barça fan then asked Puyol whether the club should throw La Liga in order to boost their chances of winning the Champions League.

The World Cup winner responded: “The league can not be thrown away, but the cup must be played by those who do not play regularly, and be at the top of the Champions League.

“Having said that, I think Barça have had a great season. Visca Barca always.”

Indeed, we may see Ernesto Valverde resting some of his bigger names on a more frequent basis next season, in order to keep them fresh for the latter stages of the Champions League.

One thing’s for sure: they’ll do everything in their power next season to ensure their enemies don’t make it four in a row.
