Some Liverpool supporters will need time to get over their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

The manner of the 3-1 defeat in Kiev really was tough to take.

It started with Mohamed Salah having to leave the game in the first half after a foul by Sergio Ramos.

Liverpool started on the front foot but their momentum faded when Salah fell on his shoulder and had to be replaced.

It was an unfortunate incident and prevented the Salah versus Cristiano Ronaldo showdown that many were looking forward to.

Injuries happen in football but a number of Liverpool fans have criticised Ramos for his part in the incident.

The Real Madrid captain locked arms with Salah and it was when he landed on the Egyptian that the injury occurred.

Lampard and Ferdinand react

Did Ramos hurt Salah deliberately? Only he knows.

Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand both excused the Spaniard of any wrongdoing, insisting it was simply an unfortunate moment that Salah came off worse from.

"No, I don't think so," Lampard said when asked if Ramos could be blamed.

“He’s got close, which any defender should do and sometimes when you get that contact you do interlink arms but I think it’s more unfortunate in the end, in the way he fell."

Ferdinand even claimed it was good defending from the 32-year-old.

“I thought it was very good defending from Ramos and I don’t think he really meant to do that [injure Salah],” the former Manchester United defender said.

Their comments haven’t gone down well with Liverpool supporters who feel that Ramos knew what he was doing.

Ramos’ reputation certainly hasn’t helped him in this situation.

Indeed, the reaction if it had been another player who hauled Salah down - Toni Kroos, for instance - might have been different.

“Typical excuses by Ferdinand and Lampard for Ramos behaviour. What a joke,” Twitter user @pfhorner wrote.

Liverpool introduced Adam Lallana but they weren’t quite as menacing thereafter.

The midfielder was the best of an uninspiring bunch of options for Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool boss will realise the importance of adding depth to his squad in the summer.

Take Salah out of the team and Liverpool are no way near as dangerous.
