Super fights are often criticised in the UFC, mainly because it makes the official rankings seem like they don’t matter.

The fact is, fighters leapfrogging more deserving names and forcing contenders to wait longer for championship fights ends up frustrating a lot of people.

SUPER FIGHT

Nowadays, they all seem to revolve around Conor McGregor; all kicking off with his initial fight against Nate Diaz which was quickly followed up by his victory in their highly anticipated rematch.

Since then, the Notorious has been linked with several high profile fights, while Khabib Nurmagomedov and Georges St-Pierre also seem to be in the mix in what would prove to be a record-breaking fight in the UFC.

However, it seems like UFC president Dana White’s priorities could lie elsewhere.

According to Dave Doyle of MMA Fighting, White has stated that the next super fight he’s putting on himself to create is a clash between fellow champions and Brazilians, Amanda Nunes and Cris Cyborg.

NUNES VS. CYBORG

He posted: “Dana White says Cris Cyborg vs. Amanda Nunes is ‘the fight to make’ and ‘it’s on me’ to get it done.”

The animosity has quietly been bubbling away since the beginning of the year with The Lioness claiming that she wants to fight the current featherweight champion.

Initially, Cyborg was hesitant as she didn’t want to see Brazil lose a world champion but following on from Nunes’ desire to meet inside of the Octagon, Cyborg has been the one aggressively pursuing the super fight.

The fight does have its hurdles, though.

Cyborg had given Nunes a deadline, one which the latter believed was unfair as it meant she would get no time to rest after defeating Raquel Pennington at UFC 224 to retain her bantamweight crown in Brazil.

Although the immediate focus is turning to Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier and with contenders running out for both Cyborg and Nunes, fans will be wanting White to come through on his promise and book this super fight sooner rather than later.

The clock is ticking, though, as Cyborg has stated that upon the completion of her contract, she’ll be looking to dive into the world of boxing.
