Poor Loris Karius.

The Liverpool goalkeeper beat out Simon Mignolet to make the No.1 spot his own this season but in the club’s biggest game of the campaign, he had a nightmare.

Karius made two mistakes as the Reds suffered a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

The first came in the 51st minute - and it was a howler.

The German threw the ball against Karim Benzema and could only watch as it trickled over the line.

Then, with Liverpool 2-1 down and time running out to find an equaliser, Karius sealed the win for Real Madrid by fumbling Gareth Bale’s effort into the net.

Liverpool’s interest in signing a new goalkeeper has been reported heavily in recent weeks. They will only have intensified after Saturday’s final.

Balotelli's message

After the initial unrest, many Liverpool supporters offered their support to Karius.

The 24-year-old needs as much of that as he can get right now and former Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli sent him some on Instagram.

Six days before the final, Karius posted a photo on Instagram with the message: “Eyes on the prize…”.

The post has since been used as a way to poke fun at the ‘keeper but Balotelli left a nice comment: “bro stay strong”.

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng also helped to console Karius.

“Stay strong and keep your head up,” Boateng wrote. “We all make mistakes!”

Unfortunately for Karius, his came in the biggest match of his career.

The ‘keeper, who joined Liverpool in 2016, will take comfort in the fact that the end of the season means he won’t be in the public eye for a while.

The matter of what this means for his Liverpool future, however, is uncertain.

Even if Jurgen Klopp decides against bringing in another goalkeeper in the transfer window, it's impossible to predict how the mistakes are going to affect Karius.

He was visibly distraught at full-time and his errors aren't going to be forgotten about for a while.

And it might take some time for his teammates to regain their trust in the German.

With that said, a parting of ways may be the only option.
