Mark Lawrenson was struck by the fact that not a single Liverpool player consoled Loris Karius at full-time after the Champions League final.

Karius was responsible for two of the goals in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat but it was Real Madrid’s players who were the first to tend to him at the end of the match.

“Not one of the Liverpool outfield players has gone to the 'keeper (Karius),” Lawrenson said on BBC Radio 5 live.

“That tells you all you need to know.

"What on earth would you say to him? I mean I feel really, really sorry for him.”

Karius won’t want to read his Twitter mentions. There are a slew of nasty messages.

It’s understandable why Liverpool supporters would be so angry with the 24-year-old given the importance of the match and the manner of his mistakes.

But such is the way on social media that some have taken things too far, with Karius sadly receiving death threats on Twitter.

It’s prompted a passionate response from BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton.

“Some of the vile and disgusting abuse vented at Karius is nothing short of disgraceful,” the former Celtic striker wrote on Twitter.

“Some people should be ashamed of themselves.”

Sutton is spot on.

Liverpool supporters are incredibly passionate and every one of them was desperate for a sixth European crown.

But Karius is human and doesn’t deserve the level of vitriol that has gone his way.

You only needed to watch Karius apologise to the Liverpool fans in Kiev, tears streaming down his face, to understand that he was cut up about his performance.

The German proceeded to apologies to his teammates and the entire club in an emotional interview with talkSPORT.

"I don't feel anything right now. Today I lost my team the game," Karius said.

"I feel sorry for everyone. I'm sorry for everyone, for the team, for the whole club. The mistakes cost us dearly.

"If I could go back in time I would.

"I just feel sorry for my team. I know I let them down today.”

It could be a while before we hear from Karius again.
