Anthony Joshua may be the crown jewel in Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing stable, but the Essex-born mogul has plenty of world class fighters in his possession.

Tony Bellew is another top boxer led by Hearn, and arguably the most exciting woman to step in the ring in recent years is also a Matchroom prodigy - the current WBA and IBF lightweight champion Katie Taylor.

However it is another string to Hearn's bow that has been capturing the attention of the boxing world, as the WBA super flyweight champion Kal Yafai made his American debut on Saturday night, and it will have taken his attention away from negotiating a potential superfight between AJ and Deontay Wilder.

The 28-year-old Birmingham-born brawler boasted a record of 23-0 before defending his gold against Mexican David Carmona, looking to boost his profile overseas after fighting before Joshua's on a few of his big cards.

Yafai's explosiveness showed against Carmona, knocking him down four times in the first five rounds, including with a strong combination of punches in round five which you can see at 37 seconds in the video below.

Carmona eventually retired in his corner following the conclusion of round seven, not being able to withstand anymore of the power Yafai was striking him with, and with that he made a huge statement to an audience that was probably unfamiliar to him and what he does in the ring before the fight.

With the IBF world champion at the same weight - Phillipines fighter Jerwin 'Pretty Boy' Ancajas - successfully defending his title in the main event of the same card in Fresno, California, all roads would seemingly lead to a unification bout in the States in the near future.

But Hearn being the businessman he is announced that he's already in talks with the camp of another fighter for Yafai's next big bout across the pond.

The name of Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez will be familiar to American fans of the sport. The former World champion was rated as the number one pound-for-pound boxer between September 2015 and March 2017, and at that time had won all 46 of his professional fights, 37 of those by way of knock out.

But his WBC crown was taken last year by Thai scrapper Srisaket Sor Rungvisai at the famous Madison Square Garden - who then subsequently knocked Gonzalez out in round four of their rematch last September.

Casual British fans may not be aware of the dangers the Nicaraguan (below) poses between the ropes, but hardcore supporters will know that it could be a dangerous fight for Yafai to take so early into his overseas career.

Hearn is adamant though it would be a positive step in the progression of Yafai's career if the matchup was to happen.

"Kal made a big statement over here and I can see him staying in the States for his next fight," Hearn told Sky Sports.

"He is ready for the challenge of unification but we also really like the Chocolatito fight and have already opened talks with his team.

"There's exciting times ahead Kal, for sure."
