An exciting 102nd edition of the Indy500 concluded yesterday, with new records, a retiring star, and fiery drama. It takes three hours and over 200 laps for the competition to finish, and is held in Indiana each year. The race usually attracts between a staggering 200,000 and 300,000 spectators every year. The historic race, dating back to 1911, was won this year by a man with a name appropriate for success - Will Power. The Australian was the first racer to ever win the Indy500 and the Indycar Grand Prix during the same year, and has now accumulated 34 wins which places him eighth on the all-time list. The Indy500 also saw Danica Patrick end her racing career. The Indy and Nascar driver hoped to go out on top, but her last race finished only 68 laps in when she crashed and had to forfeit. But still, the most dramatic story of the race was when a car was set ablaze during a pit stop.Zach Veach stopped for a tyre change and a fuel refill when a spillage caused his car to light up.You can see the crazy footage in the video below.

Suddenly, the back side of the 23-year-old’s car was on fire, which could have been disastrous.

Remarkably, Veach remained in his seat and a member of the crew signalled him to start driving.

The American obliged and luckily the speed of the car extinguished the fire before it spread.

If it hadn’t, things could have got really bad.

Fortunately, the pit crew had just finished the refill and tyre changes when the fire started.

Veach and his car proved their tenacity as they finished the race with a 23rd place finish.

The driver later tweeted about the incident, saying: "Thankful my crew and others were all okay. Not the day had hoped for.”
