It had been a rather forgettable weekend for Liverpool fans after their painful loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev.

Having watched Mohamed Salah leave the field in tears, a Gareth Bale worldie and two almighty howlers from goalkeeper Loris Karius left the travelling Kop devastated, as Zinedine Zidane’s side claimed a staggering third European cup in as many years.

It would have been a quiet trip home for many a Liverpool fan as they struggled to accept the events that unfolded in Kiev.

However, those frowns were quickly turned upside down when the club announced the signing of Monaco midfielder Fabinho on Sunday night, especially after learning the Brazilian turned his nose up at a possible move to Manchester United and Arsenal.

With Naby Keita already set to join the Red’s and Emre Can seemingly on his way out, it is clear that Jurgen Klopp has identified his midfield as a priority - and he is not wasting time.

The Brazilian joins at an exciting time for the Reds. Under Klopp this season, Liverpool have produced some of the most exhilirating football seen at Anfield in many a year.

It is no surprise that fans are salivating over the prospect of Fabinho slotting in alongside Keita at the heart of the midfield. With Virgil Van Dijk marshalling the defence behind them, it looks like Klopp is finally adding that much-needed spine to support their terrific attacking play at the other end.

Fabinho joins exclusive Liverpool club

When you consider the first signings Liverpool made after their last two Champions League finals in 2005 and 2007, the Anfield faithful will have even more reason to be excited.

Fabinho joined a very exclusive Liverpool club when he became the clubs first signing after the Kiev showpiece.

The first man through the door in the aftermath of the miracle in Istanbul was Pepe Reina. While the Spanish stopper never necessarily set England alight, he was a favourite on the Anfield terraces and went on to make 394 appearances for the Merseysiders.

With Reina in goal, Liverpool again marched into a European final in 2007, but would narrowly lose out to AC Milan.

But, as Fabinho has done this week, frowns were quickly flipped when the one and only Fernando Torres became Rafa Benitez first signing after the loss in Athens.

The rest really, is history.

Torres went on to become one of the most prolific strikers the Premier League has ever seen, breezing to 82 goals as he quickly wrote his name into the history of the famous Merseyside club.

Not a bad record then following major European finals.

While Fabinho and Torres are two very different players, if the 24-year-old Brazilian can endear himself to his new fans the way the Spanish hitman did, then he could be in for a very happy stay in Liverpool red.
