Liverpool fans will want to quickly forget the events that transpired in Kiev on Saturday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side produced some of the most exciting football of the year to secure their spot in the Kiev showpiece, but it ultimately proved to be a game too far as they succumbed to Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid.

However, for one man in particular, the disaster in Kiev will be all the more difficult to swallow.

Reds’ goalkeeper Loris Karius lived out his, and most goalkeepers, worst nightmare after two dreadful mistakes lead to Madrid goals.

Sadly for Karius, there was absolutely know one else to blame after he bowled the ball into the path of Karim Benzema, and flapped apologetically at a Gareth Bale drive.

The debate surrounding the goalkeeping situation at Anfield had quietened down a little after Karius registered some solid performances having replaced the sieve that is Simon Mignolet.

However, after Kiev, it is widely accepted that neither Karius nor Mignolet are of the world-class standard required by a club of Liverpool’s caliber, despite Jurgen Klopp constantly suggesting that they are.

Both stoppers boast a long, embarrassing string of costly records and so it is no surprise that Liverpool have been linked with several potential replacements for the hapless duo.

None more so, than Roma’s Alisson Becker.

Liverpool fans will be watching the every move the Brazilian number one makes this summer in the hope that he will swap the Eternal City for Merseyside.

Alisson speaks on Karius

Unsurprisingly, Alisson was watching what unfolded in Kiev on Saturday night, and it seems he lived the pain that Karius felt come the full-time whistle.

“I got very sad. We, goalkeepers, when we see a mistake of another goalkeeper, we end up feeling as if they were us.

“It’s very sad to see this, but he needs to put his head up. It is part of football and life must go on.

“He has to be proud to have played in a Champions League final. Of course it’s not what he expected, but it’s part of football.

“We are also subject to errors. We need to work hard not to let this happen to us.”

Lovely words - too bad he may end up replacing him in the coming months.

It will be a hard pill to swallow for Karius if he is condemned to Liverpool bench for the foreseeable future, but there is no questioning that Alisson would be a massive improvement for a side chasing silverware.
