If there is someone well credentialed to talk about some of the modern failings of Formula 1 it is Nico Rosberg.

The German driver raced 206 times for Williams and Mercedes, which included 23 wins, 57 podiums and the coveted drivers' championship in 2016.

Now retired, Rosberg is an observer of the sport and feels there are a few improvements that can be made that can improve the spectacle.

Last weekend's Monaco Grand Prix was criticised by fans and even some of the drivers themselves for the lack of on-track action to keep everyone entertained.

And Rosberg thinks a change to the aerodynamics of the cars and a lack of wheel-to-wheel racing needs to be at the top of the list of problems F1's owners Liberty Media need to fix.

"There’s just too much aero," he said, per Judge13. "Sometimes, it’s impossible for a faster guy to get past.

“I looked at my father’s Formula 1 racing car in Monaco, that was all ground effect, all the aerodynamics took place under the car, they could drive the all the way to the transmission chasing a competitor because it was there was no aero on the top of the car, so that’s the direction they need to take, and I hope they can do it for 2021."

Rosberg's father Keke won the drivers' championship for Williams in 1982, and it was in that era where so-called 'wing' cars with huge diffuser tunnels under the side pods were highly prominent.

So great was the downforce level, teams often removed the wings as they were totally unnecessary.

Since 1983, The wing cars have been banned from the F1 Circuit for safety reasons because they had become too fast for the safety standards at the time.

But Rosberg feels that is something that needs to come back into the sport.

He continued: “That’s all we need for fun!”

"We need side by side duals, wheels touching – things like that – and this is F1’s biggest problem, unfortunately, things are not going well right now.“
