The 2018 Rafael Nadal, sorry, French Open, is in full swing in Paris and it has already coughed up a few talking points.Serena Williams’ ‘catsuit’ outfit garnered quite a bit of attention as she made her return to Grand Slam tennis while Rafael Nadal was critical of the state of the famous Roland Garros courts after his first-round win over Simone Bolelli.Maria Sharapova overcame a bit of a scare to secure her place in the second round while Novak Djokovic cruised through his opening round match-up.However, one of the biggest controversies of the day came on the outside courts when 14th seed Jack Sock embarked on a remarkable tirade against chair umpire Vieira Sousa.Sock grew increasingly agitated as the game went on, calling into question a string of calls made by the umpire during his clash with Jurgen Zopp.Eventually, tempers boiled over when Sock asked if he could request a new umpire before branding Sousa ‘atrocious’.Watch a clip of Sock’s dreadful behaviour here:

Good grief, not a happy man then.

When you consider the fact that Sousa was given a gold badge by the International Tennis Federation last year, the highest honour that can be bestowed on an umpire for their performances on tour, Sock’s behaviour becomes all the more disappointing.

Sadly for Sock, his temper got the best of him as he collapsed from two sets up to crash out of the second Grand Slam of the year at the first hurdle.

However, tennis fans had very little sympathy for the American, taking to Twitter to criticise his on-court conduct.

Oh dear.

Sock has endured a miserable year in 2018. After rising as high as eighth in the world rankings, his form has veered off a cliff, failing to even win two matches in a row on any occasion on tour this year.

If he is rightly fined by the powers that be, his year is only set to get worse.
