After a terrific season where they secured 52 wins and returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2012, the Philadelphia 76ers are set to reward head coach Brett Brown.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Sixers have agreed a three-year contract extension with Brown.

The 57-year-old had just one year left on his existing deal and has done enough to earn himself a longer stay to lead the exciting young team.

Brown has been with the franchise for the last five seasons and been through the ups and downs during that time.

He has come through "The Process" and endured some dark days, which included a 10-72 season in 2015-16.

Despite winning just 47 games in his first three campaigns in charge, the organisation has stuck with Brown and are reaping the rewards.

With top draft picks Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons healthy and finally able to play together, the 76ers made a significant rise this year as they ended the regular season with a 52-30 record and finished third in the east.

Per ESPN, Philly is the second team in league history to increase their win total by 42 within three years, joining the Celtics in 2007-08, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Unfinished business

Judging by comments made by general manager Bryan Colangelo earlier this month, it was clear that the front office always intended to extend Brown's deal and keep him in Philadelphia.

"I don't think it's the healthiest of situations for coaches to go into a season with one year remaining on their contracts. It impacts so many aspects of what you're doing," Colangelo said, per ESPN.

The Sixers reached the second round of the playoffs but were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in five games.

Speaking after their postseason exit, Brown stated that he didn't feel he was owed anything by the team but believed that he and his coaching staff had done enough to be given a chance to continue to build what they'd started.

"We've grown something that I think all of us, when you take a deep breath, look around and, collectively as an organisation, I'm just so proud of where we are," Brown said.

The 76ers are primed to be one of the contending teams in the Eastern Conference in the coming years with a talented young roster.

They have two stars in Embiid and Simmons and they'll be an attractive destination for free agents in the summer because of that duo.

Now that they've tied down their head coach for the foreseeable future, the team's attention will now switch to luring the likes of LeBron James or Paul George to the City of Brotherly Love.
