It feels strange to think of Arsenal without Arsene Wenger at the helm.

The veteran Frenchman spent 21 years at the north London club, creating one of the finest teams of all time in the process.

However, it was clear for everyone to see that the 68-year-old had completely run out of ideas during his last few years in charge, as the Gunners slipped from title challengers to a top-four want-to-be.

As a result, Wenger’s tenure was cut short with the Arsenal hierarchy seeking a change of direction for the stagnating club.

Various names from the likes of Luis Enrique and Mikel Arteta were batted around in the aftermath of Wenger’s departure, but in the end, it was former PSG manager Unai Emery, who boasts a pretty impressive CV, was chosen to take up the Arsenal hot seat.

Having won three consecutive Europa League titles with Sevilla, the Spaniard was snapped up by Paris Saint Germain where he went on to win seven trophies.

Sadly, Emery’s failure to deliver the European glory that his mega-rich bosses craved proved his undoing, and he as let go by the Paris club.

Now, he find’s himself with the unique challenge of restoring the Gunners to former glories, of reuniting the fan base and of turning a group of disenchanted and unmotivated players into world beaters again.

Rather him than me.

However, former player and rising star Kylian Mbappe believes that Emery has what it takes to cut it in the Premier League.

Emery signed Mbappe from Monaco on loan with the young hitman going on to score 21 goals in his first season for the Parisians.

And Mbappe was full of praise for the influence the Spanish coach had on his play following his move to England.

“Unai Emery taught me to be more decisive, to have that desire to score goals,” he said.

“Defensively, I still have shortcomings, but it really made me progress. He’s a great coach: Seven trophies in two years is not nothing.”

Interesting stuff.

There is no questioning that Mbappe is one of the most exciting attacking prospects in the world, and Arsenal fans will be hoping that Emery can have that kind of influence over some of the lads in the Gunners squad.

Emery is widely known as a very good coach, but whether or not he can prove it at one of the biggest clubs in the world, remains to be seen.

If he does manage to coax the best out of the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil, then the fans at the Emirates could be in for quite an exciting season.

Over to you Unai.
