Since negotiations for the Gennady Golovkin v Saul Alvarez rematch have hit a stand-still, rumours have suggested that WBO middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders could potentially jump in as an opponent for Canelo. The 27-year-old withdrew from his scheduled rematch with Gennady Golovkin earlier this month after being placed under a temporary suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission in connection with two failed drug tests in February. He claimed the results were as a result of consuming contaminated meat in Mexico and at the time claimed: “I am truly shocked about what has happened and for those who have doubts and suspicions about my integrity I have always been and always will be clean fighter.Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez commented that the doping allegations made it difficult to promote the anticipated bout.“We’re going to have to cancel the 5 May rematch,” he said. “As you all know there is a hearing on 18 April and it’s extremely unlikely this will get resolved by then properly and we need enough time to promote this fight.”In the meantime, Saunders has frequently called out Golovkin in an attempt to arrange a clash against one of the biggest names in the sport but has made little progress.A clash against Canelo would also represent a stern challenge for the unbeaten Saunders, however, a tweet he posted on Wednesday afternoon would appear to rule out any chance of the duo meeting inside the ring.Reacting to rumours circulating on social media that the two parties were on the verge of starting negotiations, Saunders tweeted: "All talk @GoldenBoyBoxing, let ginger balls stick to taking Ped's. Goose will get beat."

So it's pretty safe to say that one isn't happening anytime soon.

Of course, Saunders has got another fight to focus on first anyway when he takes on Martin Murray on June 23.

Only if he dispatches the 35-year-old can Saunders' attention seriously turn to the likes of Golovkin and Alvarez.
