Although it was apparent which direction WWE was heading in earlier this week on Monday Night RAW, the company finally confirmed that Seth Rollins will defend the Intercontinental Championship against Elias at Money in the Bank.Initially, there was a great deal of disappointment once the line-ups for the ladder match had been completed.

MONEY IN THE BANK

Fans felt Elias would have been the perfect heel to throw into the match, while the hot streak The Kingslayer is on perhaps warrants him a position in that contest too. Although, being the Intercontinental Champion understandably means his priorities lie elsewhere.

This is a match that had been predicted to take place by many fans, with reports last week suggesting that WWE was either going to go with Elias or Baron Corbin as possible opponents, with the former getting the green light.

Clearly, fans are happy that Elias is being placed in a prominent match, rather than merely entertaining the crowd with another concert which always ends up in some form of destruction - as entertaining as it is.

Now that the match has been confirmed, fans on Twitter know what they want to happen, with some wanting The Drifter to leave Chicago with the Intercontinental Championship.

It's a bold claim or desire, as Rollins has done incredible work with the title by picking up where The Miz left off to keep the prestige of the championship intact, especially since it's arguably RAW's biggest prize when Brock Lesnar and the Universal title aren't on the scene.

It's not that the fans are bored of Rollins as champion, though, as they feel an Elias win can have two significant benefits.

REACTION

One, it allows Elias to be taken to that next level. He's certainly over with the fans - despite being a heel on paper - and WWE would be wise to capitalise on the popularity.

Secondly, taking the championship off The Architect means he's able to chase The Beast instead, with several sources claiming that WWE may decide to have Rollins challenge Lesnar next, instead of Roman Reigns or Braun Strowman.

Elias does need something more meaningful than endless performances, and this would be the perfect feud to elevate him to that next level where he has proven since his arrival that he belongs there.

Usually, at this point, fans would be criticising WWE for even thinking about taking the championship off Rollins.

The reaction to this announcement, though, just speaks volumes about how popular Elias truly is, and that Rollins deserves to be in the Universal Championship picture.
